Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla has intensified her public feud with France captain Kylian Mbappé, launching another verbal attack just days after the football star accused her of racism over comments made following Paraguay's World Cup exit.
Following the match, Amarilla made a series of inflammatory remarks on social media directed at the French forward. Mbappé responded by condemning the comments as "brazen racism," accusing the senator of damaging Paraguay's image and overshadowing the country's historic World Cup campaign.
Speaking in the Paraguayan Senate on Wednesday, Amarilla refused to apologise and instead renewed her criticism of the Real Madrid star.
Referring to an alleged incident involving Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, she claimed Mbappé refused to shake the goalkeeper's hand after the match and insulted him.
"When Orlando Gill... extended his hand with all the humility of a Paraguayan, this son of a bitch refused to shake his hand and shouted in his face," she said.
Amarilla insisted Mbappé's alleged behaviour did not represent France, praising the country's democratic and cultural heritage while distancing it from the footballer.
The senator had earlier sparked outrage by posting several insulting comments about Mbappé on social media, including remarks widely condemned as racist.
The dispute has drawn international attention, with reports indicating that French authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the senator's comments.
Meanwhile, videos circulating online have also shown some Paraguay supporters burning effigies of Mbappé following their country's elimination from the tournament, further fueling the controversy.
